Privacy Policy

CampusFuel is a dining and nutrition tracker for college students. It holds things people are private about: what they eat, what they weigh, and what they are trying to change. This policy explains exactly what we keep, what stays on your phone, and who else sees any of it.
CampusFuel is operated by PlateSync LLC, a limited liability company formed in Virginia. In this policy, "we" and "us" mean that company, and "the app" means CampusFuel, which currently appears on the App Store as VTCals.
What we collect
Account
Your email address, and a password that is hashed by our authentication provider. We never see or store your password in a readable form.
Profile and health details
You give us these during onboarding, and you can change or clear them at any time:
- Display name, if you enter one
- Date of birth, gender, height, and weight
- Activity level, goal, target weight, and how fast you want to get there
- Diet type, macro profile, and your calorie, protein, carb, and fat targets
- Whether gentle mode is on, which hides numeric targets across the app
- Which school you selected
What you log
- Meals and foods you log, with the date, time, and meal type
- Custom foods you create and foods you save
- Weight entries over time
- Notes and weights attached to progress photos
Technical information
Standard information needed to run and secure the service, such as your device type and operating system version, and server logs held by our hosting provider. We do not use any analytics, advertising, or crash reporting service. There is no Google Analytics, no Firebase, no Meta pixel, no Sentry, and no advertising identifier in the app.
What never leaves your phone
These stay on your device
- Progress photos. The image files stay in your phone's own storage. We store only a reference to the file, plus any weight and note you attach. The photographs themselves are never uploaded to us.
- Apple Health data. If you connect Apple Health, the app reads active energy, resting energy, and step count directly from HealthKit on your device to adjust what you see. None of it is transmitted to us or stored on our servers.
- Meal reminders. Reminders are scheduled locally by your phone. The app never registers a push token, so there is no way for us to send you a message or to know your device.
How we use it
- To create your account and keep you signed in
- To calculate your calorie and macro targets from the details you enter
- To show your dining hall menus, food logs, history, and progress
- To power the AI features described below, when you use them
- To check whether your subscription is active
- To keep the service working, and to investigate abuse or technical faults
We do not sell your personal information, and we never have.
Who else receives your data
We use a small number of outside services to run CampusFuel. Each one gets only what it needs for its job.

Beyond these, we share personal information only when the law requires it, or where it is necessary to protect the rights and safety of our users or of CampusFuel. If CampusFuel is ever sold or merges with another company, your information may transfer as part of that, and we will say so in the app before it happens.
The AI features, specifically
Three parts of CampusFuel send data to OpenAI, and only when you choose to use them. Nothing is sent in the background.
- AI Coach. Your messages are sent, along with context that helps the answer be useful: your goal, your calorie and macro targets, your diet type, whether gentle mode is on, roughly what you have eaten today, and which foods you have logged recently.
- Food photo recognition. The photo you take is sent so the food in it can be identified and estimated.
- Nutrition label scanning. The photo of the label is sent so the values on it can be read.
We do not send your email address, your name, or your account identifier with these requests. Under OpenAI's terms for business customers, this content is not used to train their models. If you would rather not share any of it, simply do not use the Coach tab, the photo scanner, or the label scanner. Everything else in the app works without them.
Wellbeing check-ins
CampusFuel looks at your own logging over the past three weeks for patterns that can indicate someone is not eating enough, such as many days well under your target or long stretches of very sparse logging. If it sees such a pattern, the app may show a gentle check-in and point you to the Safety Center.
This is calculated from data you already gave us and is shown only to you. It is not a medical or clinical assessment, it is not shared with anyone, and it is never used for advertising. You can turn these check-ins off in settings.
Using CampusFuel without an account
You can browse your campus dining menus as a guest without signing up. In guest mode we do not create a profile for you and nothing you do is associated with an identity. The only thing kept is the school you picked, stored on your own device.
How we protect it
- All traffic between the app and our servers is encrypted with HTTPS and TLS
- Data is encrypted at rest by our hosting provider
- Row level security is enabled on every table, so one account cannot read another's data
- Passwords are hashed and salted, and are never stored in readable form
No service can promise perfect security, and we will not pretend otherwise. If a breach ever affects your personal information, we will tell affected users without undue delay.
How long we keep it
We keep your information for as long as your account exists. When you delete your account, we delete your profile, food logs, custom foods, saved foods, weight history, and progress photo records within 30 days, other than anything we are legally required to keep. Backups are cycled out on a rolling basis and are overwritten within 90 days.
Your choices and rights
Wherever you live, you can do all of the following, and you do not need a reason:
- See your data. Ask us for a copy of what we hold about you.
- Correct it. Most of it you can edit yourself in the app. Ask us for the rest.
- Delete it. Delete your account from Settings in the app, which removes your data as described above.
- Withdraw permissions. Turn off Apple Health, camera access, or notifications in your phone's own settings at any time.
- Object or complain. Write to us, and if you are not satisfied, raise it with your local data protection authority.
Depending on where you live you may have further rights under laws such as the California Consumer Privacy Act or the UK and EU General Data Protection Regulation, including the right to know what is collected and the right not to be discriminated against for exercising these rights. We will honour any such request regardless of where you are. Write to the address below and we will respond within 30 days. We will never charge you for it, and we will never treat you differently for asking.
Age
CampusFuel is for people aged 16 and over. It is not designed for children, and we do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 16. If you believe someone under 16 has created an account, write to us and we will remove it.
Where your data is held
Our servers are in the United States. If you use CampusFuel from outside the United States, your information will be transferred there, where privacy laws may differ from those in your own country.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy we will update the date at the top. If a change meaningfully affects how we handle your information, we will tell you in the app before it takes effect rather than expecting you to check this page.
